The Las Vegas Raiders have made a significant move by placing Chandler Jones, a seasoned defensive end with an 11-year tenure, on the non-football illness (NFI) list. This decision comes amid a period in which Jones has been dealing with what has been described as a personal matter, prompting his absence from the team since Labor Day weekend. During this time, Jones took to social media to express his grievances towards the Raiders’ management, including owner Mark Davis, general manager Dave Ziegler, and coach Josh McDaniels. In a series of posts, he conveyed conflicting sentiments about his desire to continue playing for the team and questioned the lack of a welcoming atmosphere.

On September 6, in one of his posts, Jones alleged that the Raiders sent a crisis response team to his residence. Throughout this public discourse, Coach McDaniels maintained a position of referring to the situation as “personal” and private, refusing to elaborate or comment on the matter. He reiterated this stance even as Jones’ posts escalated in frequency and accusations, including claims regarding a family friend’s daughter being subjected to abuse, known to the team. Recently, Jones asserted that his social media account had been compromised.

While on the Raiders’ 53-man roster, Jones was inactive for the first two games of the season, a victory against the Denver Broncos and a loss to the Buffalo Bills. His shift to the NFI list implies that he will be sidelined for a minimum of four games. If he isn’t activated by the end of this waiting period, he could potentially remain on the NFI list for the remainder of the season.
In response to inquiries about Jones’ roster status, Coach McDaniels emphasized the ongoing process and the team’s need to respect it. Meanwhile, some of Jones’ teammates have expressed their support and concern for him, highlighting the importance of their collective focus on their upcoming games and maintaining a positive team environment despite this situation.
Chandler Jones, at the age of 33, is currently in the second season of a three-year, $51 million free agent contract he signed with the Las Vegas Raiders. However, if he does choose to make a return to the Raiders, he will have to miss a minimum of the next four games, including matchups against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Los Angeles Chargers, the Green Bay Packers, and the New England Patriots.
